COMPONENT 2
Promoting safe and legal migration
Since the tragic drowning of more than 300 migrants off the coast of Lampedusa in October 2013, the situation in the Mediterranean has remained dire. According to IOM research, in 2014 at least 5,017 migrants lost their lives while attempting to cross borders around the world and over 65% of them originated from Sub-Saharan Africa. In addition to the incidents in the Mediterranean, the growing number of unlicensed employment agencies are facilitating the trafficking of Ghanaians especially women to the Middle East by promising them lucrative job opportunities. COMPONENT 3
Strengthening migration data management for evidence based policy making
Despite the growing recognition of the significance of migration for development, data on migration is not readily available to inform policy decisions in Ghana. Migration data is scattered among agencies and ministries, which makes it difficult to access data as there is no sharing of data or common reporting system. A lack of coordinated approach to migration data management hinder Ghana’s capacity to understand its migration dynamics and design appropriate migration and develop policies.

In response to growing calls for better data on migration and better use and presentation of migration data, GIMMA is working with a number of stakeholders in the following areas:
▪ Establishment of a national migration data sharing framework to produce periodic statistical reports
▪ Training on migration data collection and analysis
▪ Updating of the Migration Profile for Ghana |
