The out gone Chief of Mission of the International Organization for Migration, [IOM], Dyane Epstein, says there has been a significant improvement in migration management in Ghana. She attributed this stride to the development of a national migration policy and the establishment of the Diaspora Affairs Bureau, [DAB] under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration.

This according to her depicts the strong commitment of the government of Ghana to support effective migration through diaspora dialogue. Mad. Epstein, said the ability to address
migration issues...

comprehensively and cooperatively is a fundamental requirement for responsible national governance, effective international relations and full participation in international or regional institutions.

She said though the prevailing view is that migration is mainly a positive force for development in both countries of origin and destination, unregulated migration can have social, economic, and political costs for individuals, the society and the government. But a comprehensive, transparent and coherent approach to migration and border management process can help minimize the negative impact of migration and preserve its integrity as a national social process.

Madam Epstein, who was then the Chief of Mission in Ghana, made these statements during the launch of the Ghana Integration Management Approach [GIMMA] Project in Accra. The Project is aimed at providing capacity building assistance to the Ghana Immigration Service [GIS], and other relevant stakeholders to enable them meet migration challenges in a comprehensive and cooperative way.

The Project will also contribute to migration management in the areas of border management, information outreach, migration law, and joint migration data management framework.
