The Minister for the Interior, Hon. Kwesi Ahwoi, has appealed to the personnel of the Ghana Immigration Service, [GIS], especially the Border Patrol Unit, to be extremely vigilant in enforcing the provision of the Economic Community of West African State, [ECOWAS] Treaty Protocols on free movements of persons and goods in the Sub-region, at the nation’s frontiers. He stressed that, collaboration and co-operation with other border security agencies within and across the country are very crucial in securing our borders,

and added that an essential ingredient in achieving efficient border management and security is the sharing of information and intelligence.He further urged them to bring to bear the training they received at Asuture in the area of team work and confidence building received on clamping down on illegal migration and cross border crimes.

Honourable Ahwoi made these remarks when he addressed the maiden Conference for Commanders of the Border Patrol Unit [BPU] of the GIS in Accra.

He said taking the BPU to the next level will require ‘all –hands- on- deck’ approach, and not the responsibility of the government alone, but the Patrol Commanders should do well to translate the government’s intention of transforming the Unit into a world - class status a reality.

He issued a warning to personnel who are corrupt to desist from acts which have that the tendency of jeopardizing the peace and security of the nation, since the government will not countenance such characters in a reputable institution like the GIS.
